Phantom Loads

Phantom loads, also known as vampire loads or standby power, are the electrical currents that appliances and technologies use when they are turned off.  In fact, while TV’s, computers, stereos and other electronic devices account for about 10 percent of residential electricity, 60 percent of that is being consumed when the device is not being used!

There are a few simple things you can do that can make a huge difference:

  • Unplug the device when it’s not being used.
  • Install an outlet with a switch on it and turn the switch off.
  • Install a surge protector or power strip; plug all the equipment into one and turn it off at the switch.
  • When you purchase new equipment ask how many watts it uses when it’s off and if it has sleep/standby/low-power mode. If it carries the EPA Energy Star logo it uses 75% less electricity when it’s off than regular equipment.
  • The EPA is pushing for a Global One-Watt Initiative, which will mandate that appliances and devices cannot use more than one watt when not being used; whenever you write to your representatives add a PS. “Support the Global One Watt Initiative!” and support the environment and energy efficiency.
